AROMATHERAPY

Although there is evidence of aromatic substances being used since ancient times, the term 'Arometherapy' was coined by french chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. He inaugurated the modern scientific use of essential oils in the 1920's after burning his hand in a chemical explosion at work in a perfume factor. Gattefossehe quickly healed it without infection or scarring by applying lavender oil, and went on to classify the oils and their properties.

Aromatherapy uses therapeutic essential oils from plants to promote relaxation and help relieve a wide variety of symptoms physical, mental and emotional. Aromatherapists believe that all the oils affect the emotions in some way, and as well as relieving stress and physical ailments, they can improve the circulation, relieve pain and reduce swelling.

As well as addressing physical conditions, aromatherapy massage helps to soothe conditions such as colds and flu, depression and insomnia.

Stimulating oils can boost energy levels, having a generally tonic effect on body and spirit. Relaxing oils can have a calming and sedative effect aiding stress related problems and restful sleep.

Oils should always be used under the supervision of a qualified aromatherapist.
