RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING
Provides a space for couples or individuals who are looking to find a resolution
to problems they are experiencing within their relationship. Often communication
has broken down or there are unproductive or repetitive arguments.
A couple are perhaps experiencing a life stage event such as the birth of a child,
the death of a parent, loss of a job, retirement, an affair, or differences of
opinion that bring a relationship to a crisis point that clients are finding
hard to resolve on their own.
Using an eclectic approach, the counsellor facilitates an exploration of the
difficulties present, an understanding of how they arose, and various options
for change. Clients are then invited to look at the consequences of making changes
and supported in the choice to do so.
Relationship Counselling usually lasts around six sessions.
SEX THERAPY
Is useful in addressing difficulties associated with the physical relationship.
These difficulties may be around physical intimacy in a more general sense, or
be related to specific problems associated with sexual function, such as:
* Loss of desire
* Pain on intercourse
* Erectile difficulties
* Difficulties in experiencing an orgasm.
Sex therapy takes a cognitive / behavioural approach. A programme of exercises
is designed for individuals or couples to practice in the privacy of their own
home, in conjunction with weekly sessions with the therapist to deal with difficulties
which arise as they work towards the changes that they wish to achieve.
Changing undesirable patterns of behaviour is often a gradual process and a programme
of sex therapy commonly takes between twelve and twenty sessions.
Clients are encouraged to work at a pace which is right for them and will therefore
not be rushed to finish before they are ready or feel obliged to attend any longer
than necessary.
