your specific needs with one of our therapists if required.
SYSTEMIC (FAMILY) PSYCHOTHERAPY
Systemic psychotherapy was developed in the early 1970's, aimed specifically
at addressing family difficulties. As the theory, practice and research has developed
over the years, its use as a model of therapy has been adapted to work successfully
with individuals and couples.
A systems focused approach (systemic psychotherapy) specifically addresses the
contexts in which a particular individual or family exist. Thus, for example,
family, social, cultural, gender and sexuality, values and beliefs systems may
all be explored in-depth and work is conducted directly to address the relationship
between these contexts.
Therapeutic interventions. employed are tailored to meet the needs of each child,
family, couple or individual and may include, for example, cognitive and/or behavioural
techniques. Most important is a belief that all therapeutic plans are created
in partnership with the client and are flexible and adaptable in order meet any
changing needs over time.
PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
The purpose of this form of psychotherapy is to enable people to explore primarily
through
talking, past and present psychological, emotional and relationship difficulties.
Principally, this tends to be more of an in-depth form of psychotherapy although
this is within the context of everyday living. Therefore a primary aim is towards
a deeper understanding about the meanings of presenting difficulties as compared
to dealing
more specifically with symptoms and behaviour.
On the whole if psychotherapy is successful, symptoms and behaviour should be
alleviated
and altered. Thus a deeper and lasting change is a greater purpose.
This form of psychotherapy is undertaken within a short, medium or long-term
basis. This extends from between three and six months at the shorter end of the
scale to a
number of years in the longer term.
