I don’t know about you, but I’ve had an unusual summer.  Too many high points to mention (can I sneak in a mention of our youngest daughter’s graduation?  No children in education now - that’s a milestone!) plus a couple of medical issues, which were anything but high points and stopped me in my tracks.  I had to take time away from the work which I love.  I couldn’t drive for a while and was unable to do Indian Head Massage while my arm was healing. I am so happy to be back! It does however make sense to reflect on what I learned over my “downtime”.

You can’t force healing. It will happen in the right time for your body and mind. Listening to my body and taking its cues about what I could and couldn’t do was an ongoing challenge. Much of my learning came from doing too much and then being sore as a result. I now accept that there is a delicate balance between reaching for milestones and accepting that taking things slowly is a sensible strategy.

I had to ask for help with tasks I would normally do easily. This ran in the face of my normal way of being, which is very self-contained and independent. I now recognise that it feels more empowering to lean into the acceptance of constraints, rather than rail against things I can’t change. I’m curious to know how long I’ll be able to sustain this new philosophy! It can take a while to embed a new thought process, especially as I get back into the hurly-burly of working life.

For years I’ve had a strong identity around what does and doesn’t make me squeamish. I discovered that I’m not as robust as I thought I was. Stitches removal, for example. A useful lesson about how long-standing beliefs and behaviours can change – even if I didn’t want them to. Change can occur in the least expected places. Who knew that lying on a couch with my feet up is quite comfortable!

My Reiki practice helps to bring clarity, balance and acceptance to me as well as my clients, but I’m not immune to the requirement to work on how I view my world and my place in it. One of the things about Reiki, is to be open to receiving the healing energy you need (and it might not be what you think you want!). Practicing Reiki doesn’t stop me experiencing life’s challenges, but when I remain open to receiving what I need, it allows me a smoother journey through the difficult patches.

Quite simply, I’m glad to be back! My journey towards balance and acceptance of what this wonderful life throws my way has taken some steps forward. Let me help you with yours!
